About the Club

The object of the club shall be to encourage public interest in the art and science of music, especially through the support of the BBC Concert Orchestra.  Please click here to view the constitution in full.

The Club – the brainchild of Members of the BBC Concert Orchestra - was launched in the summer of 1983.

The Orchestra had long wished to make a wider yet more personal contact with its audience, and saw the Club as a way of fulfilling this need and, by working on the existing excellent relationship it enjoyed, extend benefits available to its Members.

A Committee of 10 regular members from The Hippodrome audience was formed to develop this idea, and organise events and activities to bring the Orchestra and audience together in a social environment. Arranging coach trips to Outside Broadcasts is an example, and Post “Friday Night Is Music Night” Club Christmas parties with Members of the Orchestra performing are legendary.

In the Autumn of 1986, by which time some 1,200 people had joined, the Orchestra had to seek the services of an outside Administrator to run the Club, and this administration continued until December 2003, when the Committee assumed control of the Club and its finances. Today two of the original Committee are still serving, Brian Crouch (Chairman) and Jenny Thomas (Membership and Accounts). The Club is run entirely by volunteers, and is not part of the BBC.

Over the years, despite many changes in venues and musical trends, the Club has continued to thrive with a constant membership of around 720. Indeed 19 of the first 62 Members who joined in July 1983 are still regular concert goers, and 15 of the 54 Members of the Orchestra are still here too!

The Club organises concerts, recitals, and outings for the Members and is happy to welcome new people to the ranks. Our aim is to support the Orchestra, not only at public concerts, but as individuals at their concerts and recitals, and to continue to extend the friendly relationship we have enjoyed with them for so long.
